Ered Gorgoroth and Nan Dungortheb

I put these two together in this thread because they are basically one area of terror, and because it saves space in the forum...

The mountains are connected to the highlands of Dorthonion, so it has to be possible to visually connect the two. I found this example from the Dolomites that might do. The green slopes to the right could be the edge of the highlands.

They could have this kind of a sharp rising edge:

(Imagine the Nan Dungortheb to the left in the picture above)

The mountains have to be scary and dramatic, but can't bee too high and shouldn't be snow covered unless it is winter.
I stay in the Dolomites for a while: upload_2017-8-9_13-10-38.jpeg

Now the valley below doesn't look particularly scary and should have more trees. But the mountains look good I think,

In the valley below, we should find really dense forests:

This is basically the same look as the worst part of Mirkwood later on.

Beautiful mountains, and i like most of the forest pics too... I thonk those could work well for nan dungortheb

One for saurons abode for sure...

First he has some sort of base established on the area... Later he haunts the region as a vampire ( but maybe he just returns to his former then abandoned hideout)
