Ooh, Odola, have you ordered “The Nature of Middle-earth”? Head-canons will be needing an infusion of athelas….
Have you got it yet? Is ther anything about Luthien getting menopausal, all wrinkled up and grey haired? I do not have it here yet, but it would be interesting development indeed.
My head canon is totaly different from what I disccuss here. I do have one, but that one is so "out there", I do enjoy it only privately. There was a fanfic once, it was called "The Wars of the Valar" - my head canon is very heavely influenced by that one, with a few elements added on my own.
But what I discuss here is what I read in the books - of course as I read them - and for me Tolkien created a world that is meant to be coherent and believable - the characters real people and not just props to propel the story further. The Valar are not whimsical, even if those lead by them may exerience their decisions as such at times. There are rules, even if those who tell the story to us might not understand them themselves. We as readers have the benefit of hindsight and I do not think it proper to give up that benefit. What for?
As far I do remember it was Elwing who made the choice to be an elf remembering her mother Nimloth?
And about Tuor I do remember a passage about him being "counted among the Eldar that he loved" or something to that effect.
Idril was pureblood elf and I do not remember about her being given a choice. Do we even have a clear confirmation that Tuor and Idril arrived in Valinor for sure? I remember this being only hinted at, not actually described? We see them set out, but not actually arriving, as far I do remeber?
Of course, there are so many versions of the story, I might have missed one.
