I'm a little disappointed that a 6'2" actress was nominated but didn't win the vote...as that would have solved all of the 'but she's not tall enough' issues. Putting 5" heels on a 5'7" actress is fine, but not really the same.
Yes and I'm still a bit concerned about the age. An actress born in -88 will play the mother of an elven woman born in -76. I can't really shake the feeling that this won't work.
Elves don't work. There's no reason why each generation should look younger than the previous - why would 3000 year old Elrond look appreciably younger than his 8000 year old forebears (as an example)? Really, the only realistic casting that works is the way PJ found his Lorien Elves for Helm's Deep - bring in every 6' tall model within 400 miles, give 'em pointy ears, teach 'em to march.
I'm pretty sure I recall that the elves at Helm's Deep were actual military. I fought the actress that was picked for Celebrian, mostly because she doesn't look young enough, but it didn't take.
We will inevitably have some actors and actresses who are older than others, or look older than others. I see no way around that. I can live with that.
But here we will have two actresses, one clearly older than the other. The older will play the daughter of the younger. It won't matter if they are elves. It will not look good.
I remember PJ laughing in the commentary about how hard it was to get the models to do that one turn in unison as the Elves formally presented themselves to Theoden. Models are used to turning, but individually.
