British Culture

Matthew H's post on Pippin piqued my interest in exactly how much does Tolkien's British upbringing play in the creation of his characters and their responses to situations? If recollection serves me, didn't Tolkien in his letters elude to real people make great characters? Having several British friends who were born and raised in London during WWII, Pippin's behavioral response to danger would have actually been quite normal. After all, a cup of tea is the remedy for all that ails one.
