Cast So Far...

Huh? Watanabe as Saruman? Seriously? You vetoed casting Asians or black people as Avari elves because that might look racist but now we cast an asian actor as Saruman? Look... i know this is just a fanfic project, it isn't real, but i don't have to understand your decisions guys... mind we already did cast other actors as the young Curumo and the young Olorin and i believe the young Radagast as well...

It was put to the vote, he won, they didn't see fit to veto it.

We were given the instruction that, like with the Valar, the Istari can be of any race, with a preference for variety among them. I intend to nominate an Aboriginal actor as Radagast when the time comes; no doubt others have other suggestions that we will consider.

Also, the reason we didn't cast the elves as different races was not to avoid 'appearing racist'. It is based on the story of the migration of the Elves. They start out as one people at Cuiviénen. Then, they split into different groups as decisions about migration. Family members end up in different groups. So, making the Avari 'look different' from the others to start with would have been a weird way to bring that story to the screen.

Saruman goes all over the place, including to the east. I personally think that casting a Japanese actor for Saruman is a nod to this. And, moreover, we don't need to force ourselves to cast Asian actors as the Blues (and in fact I'd rather not do that automatically, it would be a discussion around what version of their story SilmFilm wants to tell, and how the casting would interact with that story)

For my own part, I was surprised by Watanabe's win because I don't really think of his voice as sonorous; he tends to be raspier in the roles that I remember him most, in The Last Samurai and Batman Begins respectively. The Huor actor who won also surprised me, mostly because I'm unfamiliar with his filmography.
