Conceptions of Hope

At some appropriate moment in the text, I would appreciate a refresher on “omdir” vs “estil.”

Apologies for spelling errors here, I’m 99% a podcast listener and these are the spellings lodged in my brain. (I almost said “head canon” but that seems wildly incorrect when it comes to something as straightforward as spelling.)

I had a clearer concept of these a few chapters back but find that my understanding of them has slipped, and I would greatly love a review of these important concepts.

Thanks,
Pat

As I understand it, amdir is hope based on practical considerations. Estel is the hope that is faith that no matter what happens here and now, the ultimate result of the world will be good, that the arc of the universe bends towards justice.

In short you could translate them with positivism and the other with faith. The first is common in human nature while the second is only present in a few I would say. It needs practice, grace and a community to be able to grow in your mindset
