Eglarest and Brithombar

Yes, but I meant defensive from the sea, not from land. Are our elves going to build a port surrounded by a chain of islands, perhaps, to limit the number of entry points for ships? Or build a structure like this?

I don't think that's necessary, unless we give Morgoth a navy, something I don't remember any reference to. But if we don't have them build structures or concern themselves with protecting their sea flank, we could have a battle scene that begins with a group of orcs being smuggled onto the port on small boats at night: a classic sneak-attack move.
Ah, yes, they would probably leave the seaside end of the port open, thinking it is protected by Ulmo or detested by the enemy.

from the text I had imagined it looked more like this:

index.php

but you're right... according to the maps the Tower if more far away from the towns
But I'm not sure I like the maps, because Círdan would choose a place where you could see far into the west, and the two places indicated by the maps are shielded from the west by capes... I think Círdan would have chosen a place close to where it says Barad Nimras is.

not necessarily true... as the hilly part might be higher so you can watch far above the cape... I guess Cirdan would live in a Tower or in the uptown in that case...

Fair enough. Just as long as he can look to the west and remember seeing the disappearing Tol Eressëa.

How large do we imagine both towns?

I've seen estimations for the demography of beleriand which calculated that up to 30.000 elves could have lived in each town... though i guess not all of them in the town itself as there could have been many small dwellings and manors along the coast , and inland along the rivers and in the hills.

a bit too mediterranean for my taste, but i#m not so much interested in the architecture of both, but more in the general setting of the town and it#s walls..

Here's a picture from the coast of Portugal again. I was there a few days ago. This is a small beach (to the right) surrounded by cliffs. The beach was at the end of a long valley stretching northward from the coast. In this example, I believe there was just a small stream in the valley but it could just as well have been a broad river.

Yeah the small stream sort of died before reaching the sea.

Cadiz is one of the longest continually inhabited sites in Europe, so it might be a good model for the ports of Brithombar/Eglarest. It's at the entrance to Mediterranean on the coast of Spain.

As you can see, it's possible to have that arm of land stretching out to protect the bay be the part where you build your town.

I am not by any means suggesting that we film there. Nothing about the place would be helpful to this project (I don't think). Well, that's not true. There's a Tolkien artist who lives there (Joe Gilronan). But as far as the map goes...I think it offers some interesting possibilities.
