Elves

Oh, Tom Hiddleston for Eol maybe?

Hm. He's got such an innocent look. Personally I'd cast him as one of the good guys. I don't know.

I realized I missed noting a few suggestions (and I added a few more):

Blonde -
Elizabeth Mitchell
Charlize Theron (another Galadriel maybe)
Diane Kruger (again, a potential Galadriel...)
Elizabeth Banks (well she's blonde...)
Bradley James
Max Riemelt
Jude Law

Darker hair -
Jennifer Connelly
Joseph Fiennes
Ralph Fiennes (another Eol suggestion!)
Emmy Rossum
Tom Welling
Charlie Anson
Patrick Wilson (Fingolfin?)
Tom Machell
Matthew Beard (Perhaps Amrod/Amras - would be nice to have some really young looking sons of Fëanor together with more mature ones, to add some dynamics)
Natalie Portman
Michelle Monaghan
Jessica Biel
Josh Hutcherson

Well, anyone who can play Stephen Hawking's got range to burn. I'll keep looking though.
It's not that I don't think he's got the ability to act. He's obviously a good actor. And having been in the business myself I'm a bit allergic to too much type casting, so I think that a bit of "tension" between looks and behaviour can be really good. It's something else with Redmayne that makes it difficult for me to picture him as Maeglin. Maybe it's got to do with warmth - I picture Maeglin as colder. Redmayne could be one of the bad guys though. What about Curufin?

Aaron Taylor-Johnson (another good singer). Doesn't he look a little bit like Rufus Sewell? If Sewell is Fëanor, then Aaron T-J might be a son. upload_2015-8-17_14-59-22.jpeg

Here is an actor suggestion I forgot to add earlier. I think he'd be really good as Maeglin: Ben Barnes. upload_2015-8-30_8-43-18.png

Ok I know it's premature but anyway... I've been thinking about the sons of Fëanor. I think it's important to get a set of actors who could work as a set of brothers, as well as fit the individual requirements for the brothers.
Here is a suggestion for the whole gang:
ed-cooper-colour-crop.jpg
Ed Cooper Clarke as Maedhros. A british actor, as is all of them.
tumblr_ncd4b4BtB51tmge2to1_500.jpg
Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Maglor.
Joe-Anderson.jpg
Joe Anderson as Celegorm.
upload_2015-9-1_10-51-37.jpegJonathan Rhys Meyers as Caranthir.

images
Jack Farthing as Curufin.
upload_2015-9-1_10-54-7.jpegMatthew Beard as Amrod and Amras.

1. Are these guys possible? I think some of them are better suggestions than others.
2. Do they look like brothers? I considered actors who could be accepted as related to a Fëanor played by Rufus Sewell. I started to think about Nerdanel as well, but it got a bit complex. Again, I think some are better than others.
I'm least convinced about Celegorm and Curufin.

I know that I am going to get tomatoes thrown my way because of this but...

I picture Ian Somerhalder as Curufin (He must have that weicked air around him I think)

And Kevin Zeger and Zac Efron as Amrod and Amras... (With some help of be wigs and L'Oreal...)

Maybe then we could even consider Chace Crawford as Celebrimbor?

The catch with my "brilliant" idea is that I always imagine Ralph Fiennes as
Fëanor... and Ian does not looke a bit like him...

Mostly due to his work as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights...

The one that does look like Ralph and could be considered for Curufin (from my perspective) could be Bradley Cooper... but... Bradley Cooper?

I know Glorfindel won't show up for a long time yet, but I've always imagined him being played by Heath Ledger. That is, assuming we're disregarding the restrictions of reality...

I love Kiera Knightly, but I think we would be doing Luthien a disservice by casting anyone who is identifiable as one race. Luthien owes much of her identity to her mixed heritage. I don't know many actors, but someone like Amerie is a great example: mixed race (Korean/African-American) and if you can look past the Destiny's Child, 90's R&B vibe, she's a great singer. I've never seen her act before, but at least this is the direction I think Luthien's casting should go towards.

For Edward Redmayne as a villain, see 'Jupiter Ascending.' He does the crazy speak quietly in anger thing a lot, but....

Please keep in mind that an actor's hair color and facial hair can be altered with wigs and a shave. We'll almost definitely be using wigs for the elves anyway. And, yes, this sometimes gives you the disconnect of blond Legolas with dark eyebrows (so not everyone will look good in every color wig), but we should not let an actor's natural hair color affect casting too much. Tom Hiddleston has short blondish-brown hair, and plays Loki with long black hair. For casting, it is *much* more important to get someone who can embody the character's personality. So, Maeglin needs to be an emo moody teen, not just 'dark hair, pale skin, frowns.'

That being said, here's a quick run down of elven hair color (please correct my mistakes):

Red
Mahtan (father of Nerdanel; Fëanor's teacher)
Maedhros
Amrod/Amras

Silver
Celeborn
Elwë
Olwë
Círdan

Blond
Ingwë
Indis
Earwen?
Finrod
Galadriel (actually gold and silver mixed)
Aegnor
Amarië?

Black
Eöl
Maeglin

Dark Brown ('dark' could range from brown to black; they don't all have to match)
Finwë
Míriel
Fëanor
Maglor
Caranthir
Curufin (his hair should match Fëanor's coloring)
Fingolfin
Fingon (long, worn in braids, with gold ribbons in it)
Turgon?
Aredhel
Lúthien
Celebrimbor

Light Brown/Dark Blond/Indeterminate
Celegorm (yes, I know 'the fair' is problematic, but with 7 brothers to differentiate, just go with this!)
Nerdanel (I think hers is meant to be medium brown with red highlights)
