Just to throw into the pot of conversation.... where do the elves like Luthien and Arwen land in this conversation? Their immortality certainly changes to mortality.

I think Ilúvatar himself would have to be involved there, and as clear special-cases, it's kind of difficult to draw broad conclusions from them.

It does raise the question of whether Ilúvatar could intervene and grant immortality to Bilbo and Frodo as special cases, but I'm not sure I like that option. We're told of Men (and by extension, I believe, Hobbits) in the Silmarillion, "Death is their fate, the gift of Ilúvatar, which as Time wears even the Powers shall envy." While immortality in this world may seem the better gift to some, this passage indicates that it is not necessarily so, and I'm not sure Ilúvatar would grant it without good reason.
