Irons is of course a wonderful actor, who certainly can play the warm, fatherly old wizard - and also in a believable way be someone people can be a bit intimidated by, while the great kings and leaders can scoff at him and call him a scarecrow and bearer of bad news. He would be very good as both Gandalfs, the Grey and the White.

I just love Peter Capaldi, and I think he'd be fantastic as the grumpy Gandalf, the wise Gandalf, well - any Gandalf. There's an intensity about him, a certain energy that indicates passion - but also sometimes in a distracted way that could add some credability to why a certain kind of people tend to unerestimate him, and makes the moments of Gandalfs own uncertainty, hesitation and delaying of action more believable. In short, Peter Capaldi would make Gandalf a fully fleshed out, three-dimensional person, who would be believable as the best wizard of all times, but not be it in a way that would make his participation defuse all tension and make success all to obvious.

One of the most acclaimed actors of our time, and rightfully so, Oldman is also extremely versatile and skilled at transforming into different characters: Churchill, Dracula, Sid Vicious, Ludvig van Beethoven and Sirius Black in Harry Potter - and he has created each of these roles with 100% credibility. He was Commissioner Gordon in Nolan’s Batman movies, a role with a touch of Gandalf - and also George Smiley in Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy which he did with the quality of a Wise Old Man. He has the quality of being both powerful and fragile at the same time, which would be really interesting in Gandalf. He has often played bad guys, but he has a lot of warmth.
