Idril

So I think we’ll need an adult Idril for the latter half of Season 4, since she’ll be an adult by then.

Lily James https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4141252/
Age: 29
Height: 5’7”
Notable Roles: Rose MacClure in Downton Abbey, Cinderella in Cinderella (2015), Debora in Baby Driver

Sophie Turner https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3849842/
Age: 22
Height: 5’9”
Roles: Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, Young Vida Winter/Adeline March in The Thirteenth Tale. She’s also in the running to play Princess Diana in The Crown.

Wilde has been cast as Elenwe. Actors aren't typically recast in different roles unless one is a voice role.

Idril should be young (probably an actress in her 20s), and she should have a vivacious spirit to her - the kind of person who just fills a room when she enters it. She's been through a lot, but she's remained positive and kind-hearted despite her losses and the hardships she's endured. I mean, she should be pretty/cute, too, but that warm-hearted positive spirit vibe is the important part.

Some artists renditions:

Catherine Karina Chmiel (Kasiopeia) depicts her as a somewhat cool elf-princess, demure but sending off the strongest possible 'don't you dare touch me' vibe to Maeglin.

Jenny Dolfen depicts the moment she falls for Tuor:

Also keep in mind that we've already cast her parents, Turgon and Elenwë.

Sounds like a good plan.

I know @Marielle is dead-set on casting Lily James as Idril, and Sophie Turner came up as my secondary choice for Idril as a contrast to what happened to Sansa.

What’s the third image supposed to be at the very end of the post under the last sentence?

Dunno; the post was giving me a terrible time with posting images for some reason, and I can't delete that.

So the Hosts have spoken, and they want Idril to be cute, short, and easily underestimated. I’ve griped about her being short, particularly because Elves are tall as a rule, and the Hosts have preferred height when casting for Elven women. If we want a taller actress for the role, we have to make a case for it. My personal preferences can be seen at the top of this thread.

Thoughts?

She might be too young for the role, but if we’re aiming for a shorter actress:

Nell Tiger Free
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4836100/
Age: 19
Height: There’s conflicting reports; Google says 5’5”, IMDB says 5’7”
Roles: Princess Myrcella Baratheon in Game of Thrones (Season 5)
I suggested her a couple years ago for a teenage Galadriel concept.

Adult Idril will be introduced in Season 4 Episode 5 at the Mereth Aderthad. We likely won't see her in Episode 4, so the 'transition' from child to adult will be in the time that passes while the Noldor establish their realms.

Personally, I think that Lily James is 'short' enough to meet their criteria. I realize that a 5'7" woman is of fairly average height (and not short), but when she stands next to her 6'5" tall father, she will be dwarfed and look diminutive. (We will not see Adult Idril and Elenwë together in any scenes, though it's always possible Idril would see her mother in memory/flashback at some point).

Sophie Turner is certainly tall when she stands next to Kit Harrington, but even she wouldn't look tall next to the Hound.

This is just a reminder that while we are treating height as a rather objective criteria, it's actually all relative on film. Idril consistently goes barefoot, so she will appear shorter than the actress does when she walks around in heels on the red carpet!

I would say we're probably looking for an actress who is in her 20's, in the 5'3"-5'8" range (visibly shorter than Tuor will be), has a diminutive/cute look to her. Very strong persona, but physically in danger when confronted by Maeglin. Photos of her while blond will help people visualize her in that role (though obviously the actress can wear a wig). Her look will probably be a bit more 'natural' on the makeup side than you might expect from a princess.

I think she is the kind of person who is quiet and thoughtful, but looks right through you.

I'm certainly not vetoing them, though I am going to point out that Sophie Turner is on the tall side (also not my personal view of Idril, but that's neither here nor there).

Remember Gimli was played by John Rhys-Davis, who is 1.85 m. So height can be fixed with special effects.

Ok so here's a smaller Idril (5'4"). Chloë Grace Moretz. IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1631269/

I think she meets the casting criteria well. She's small, and I think it would be easy too underestimate her. In fact, she's pretty awesome (and isn't afraid to do rather tough fighting scenes), and I believe she can portray a woman with rich mental powers well. I've seen her in a couple of movies, Kick-Ass and Hugo Cabret. She's a good actress.

Yeah, not only is she small, but she was a child actress, which is something I suggested during the session. Casting a former child actress will lead the audience to think of Idril the same way that the Noldor do. As a child.
