Looking for a Lewis quote

I have a vague recollection of Lewis writing something along the lines of, "Authors intend, readers ____ ," where ____ is something "understand."

The gist is that, while writers might mean to convey a specific idea, it is readers that ultimately interpret the text.

I'd be grateful if anyone can provide the real text and its source. I've tried Googling extensively but for a short, simple phrase, it's difficult.

Hmmm, have you tried looking in "An Experiment in Criticism"? I don't know if what you are looking for is there, but that is where I would go to find out what C. S. Lewis has to say on authorial intent vs the response of the reader.
