Luthien

What's the joke with Snow White and the Huntsman? I've never seen it.

But we should stick closer to the text when it comes to coloring.
It's a perfectly acceptable movie, but it casts Kristen Stewart as Snow White, and Charlize Theron as the Queen. Nothing against Stewart, who I'm sure is a fine actress/wonderful person/all that jazz, but I cannot believe that a woman who looks like Theron would feel threatened by a girl who looks like Stewart. Nope, just can't buy it, and that undoes the whole conceit of the film. I mean, look at them!

I actually haven't seen anything with Kristen Stewart.

Apart from looking for someone who looks like Edith, we should consider our Arwen, Gemma Arterton (who should make people think of Luthien).

So, to give us a starting point for a face that resembles both Edith and our Arwen actress, I tried out one of those combine things and came up with this image:

Incidentally, I also came across a picture of Gemma Arterton in which she has pretty similar hairstyle to Edith's. They're not exactly twins, especially at the nose but... considering the difficulty of finding an exact match, I found it a pleasing enough resemblance:

To be clear, I still would prefer we cast a separate actress for Lúthien. But I did note Arterton happens to also have a feasible "daughter" resemblance to Rachel Weisz, whom we've cast as Melian. And maybe she could even be a workable option for Marielle's concern? So....if we're still pretty stuck whenever casting eventually comes around and can't find anyone, it wouldn't be a *terrible* plan B to make her our Lúthien. So far, I think Isabelle Furhman and Katie McGrath look promising, but if we're going to be sticklers on resemblance it may be a challenge...

So far going by look i would prefer fuhrmann or devenport, but it's hard to decide along facial features... Obviously we all see different things in a persons face, one looks more for the eye, the other for mouth or nose, yet another for the facial silhuette.

Personally i would prefer an actress with a more full face, like edith had, over an actress with a more slim face such as arterton... But then again in eyes she come closer than other actresses. However i think ediths mouth and nose look softer than hers. Hair and position of the camera does affect a lot how we view someones face and in her picture her hair is very close to ediths. But then again it's far easier to change an actors hair than his facial features ( still camera position and mask can do a lot more than we like to think)

Sorry, I can't really see Fuhrman as Luthien. I guess Davenport would be ok but she doesn't look a lot like Edith (or Arterton, for that matter).
So I guess we'll have to find some more actresses. There's no reason to hold back, we should just bring in everyone remotely possible.

Jennifer Lawrence.....

There are things to be said about her previous work...it certainly makes me hesitate a bit, not because of the quality of her work but because of strong associations.

Regardless, she is a really good actress.

She also looks like she could be our Melian's daughter, and sort of passes the Arterton-test, I think. Perhaps she doesn't look too much like Edith though.

You know, the main thing I remember Fuhrman from is The Hunger Games, where she plays Clove, the violent knife specialist.

Ok I know some people would like to see Lily James as Idril, but I think it would be wrong not to mention her in the discussion about Luthien.

A (short) dancing scene:

I think lily james could do it.. I mean, we really would need more than just one pic of edith tolkien to judge our actresses. The young edith bratt had a quite unique look, while she had a rather full face, with still quite soft features she yet had a sharp profile - a thing i miss about many actresses we've talked about.

I think the luthien we're looking for should have a sincere, a melancholic but also a joyful and warm-hearted side... James and lawrence could do it i believe.

Of course the singing voice should also be important. I had forgotten that luthien should sing her spells... How could i !

Well, there are very few pictures of a younger Edith to find.

Exactly that, just four. And one is a side view.

I see no one's commented on my suggestions opening this thread.

The sideview/ profile is interesting though.

But of course we're not trying to cast an exact lookalike, but an actress we feel who could give the right impression, someone of who we think she could visually represent a real luthien, with objection of what that meant to jrrt.

I can see ridley as luthien. I think we have voted against showing a younger luthien, have we? Personally I think it would distract the audience.
