After our discussion about different versions using either "masters" or "makers" when referring to who can't find the doors of Durin, I decided to check my Japanese copy to see which they translated. The paragraph in Japanese is:
The highlighted phrase (Juukyo no shujin) literally means "residence's master", suggesting that they worked off of "master" rather than "maker". However, I also find it interesting that by making the master that of the residence rather than just of the doors, this translation seems to emphasize the doors being part of the kingdom as a whole. Maybe there's something more going on which someone with better knowledge of Japanese might understand, but that's what I've got from the passage so far.
