Session 2:23 - Creative Input from the Listeners!
April 17, 2017

Summary of discussion:
Recall that the lighting in Season 2 will be starlight, firelight, and (in Valinor) treelight

Cuiviénen: Open with large mountain backdrop. Distant hills and mountains (large lake)
No Alps; no snow-topped mountains; not a wall/barrier; mountains should appear 'climbable'
First Choice: Lake Riza, Georgia
(missing an island)
2560
2561
2562
Runner up: Leigh Lake in Grand Tetons, Wyoming, USA
(as long as the lake is big enough)

2558

2559

Alqualondë

Veto of 'tropical blue' water for the sea at Alqualondë
Volcanic islands - Pacific Ring of Fire (possibly Japan)
Hawaii (or other Polynesian location) for Pelorí
Natural Harbor with Sea Gate
2563

Tol Eressëa
Looks like it broke away from main land
Rocky, not chalky
Not a volcanic peak
Roughly the size of England/Ireland (or at least fairly large)
Maybe never show the entire island from the sky (too big)

2564

Calacirya
Ray: "I like the idea of Valinor being a lot larger than most people picture in their headcanon (for example, I've always pictured the Calacirya to be almost a cleft in a narrow mountain range rather than a large alpine valley that divides the Pelori in twain). It will give a scope and grandeur to Valinor (especially when we do the Melkor and Ungoliant look down on Valmar scene)
I would love to see a river cascading down the Calacirya (in my mind, the Calacirya is at least a mile higher on the western end where Ezellohar is than on the eastern end). The river could flow through Tirion in a series of waterfalls."

Kalalau Valley, Hawaii
Large valley between steep volcanic mountains
Add a hill for Tirion to be built on, and alter the harbor for Alqualondë

Tírion
Tower is minaret lighthouse
Built upon the hill of Túna
Tower is off-center, and the central square is off-center in a terraced city.
2569

Taniquetal
Cloisters - open, monastic
2570

2571
2572

Slightly beneath the snowline - connected to Ilmarin by a winding Stair - lies Ingwë's Hall. It's not a City but rather a palace-like structure with a dome set on a plateau overlooking the sea from the west. There are a few lesser buildings, but it’s not a huge city.

Valmar
Note the scale on the Trees!

Psst. This is the S01 subforum...

(I'm well aware, but the Season 2 subforum was never unlocked, so this is where all the Season 2 suggestions were posted.)

Formenos
Fortress
Cannot rely strictly on natural fortification - has to be clearly his own design that makes it that way.
Foreground the walls/gates, not 'merely' a location
Not Masada
Architecture shows preparedness for war
Snowy mountains backdrop is good
Does not look humble; does not need to look huge
Part can be underground (vaults)
Beautiful but imposing (not gorgeous, not sparkling)
Plain/intimidating on the outside, beautiful on the inside
Star fort design concept - Fëanorean 8-pointed star

Swiss mountain fortress
2576

Ezellohar

Clearly artificial hill rising in a plain
Silbury Hill
2579
A bit too small - bigger than this. But good that there are no hills around it.
Glastonbury Tor would be good for scale, but has hills nearby

Telperion
"Dark green leaves had the one, that beneath were as silver shining, and he bore white blossoms like the cherry, from which a dew of silver light was ever falling, and earth was dappled with the dark and dancing shadows of his leaves amid the pools of gleaming radiance.“

Silver linden tree - pale undersides of leaves
+ white cherry blossoms
Shimmering with light in the breeze

25802581

Laurelin
"Leaves of young green like the new-opened beech the other bore; their edges were of glittering gold. Yellow flowers swung upon her boughs like the hanging blossoms of the merry trees Men now call Golden-rain; and from those flowers there came forth warmth and a great light.“

Beech leaves:
2582

Laburnum flowers:
2583

Bark: Silver like a mallorn

Thangorodrim
Definitely should be like an active volcano
Bezymianny, Kamen and Klyuchevskoy (Russia)
2584

Angband
Balrogs are uneven architects...
Dante's inferno is an interesting model...but not a vacant crater
Concentric circles getting smaller and smaller
Further down and further in to get to Morgoth's throne...
Dark and indoors - not open or revealed
Like a missile silo/bunker
2585

Sauron's necromancy lab
Marielle: "Remember the cloth covered statues in The Day of the Doctor special (Dr. Who)? We could take that idea, with maybe black or red silk, but make the shapes underneath much more twisted/distorted/unsettling. We never need to take the silk off, but a few of those scattered without explanation in his lab could be really creepy."

Operating theater - observation space around the lab
2587
