Script Discussion S06E09

To address Odola's concerning re: geography

In the last episode, the confrontation with the Sons of Fëanor led to Celegorm and Curufin fleeing and taking the road through Nan Dungortheb east. Their confrontation with Beren and Lúthien takes place to the west of the Brithiach crossing of Sirion, not far from Tol Sirion. The Fëanoreans had been heading north; now they've turned eastward.

Beren and Lúthien thus begin this episode at the place where that confrontation took place. They will stay there until Beren is well enough to move. Then, they will move again. They may be wandering more or less at haphazard for part of this story, but they are aware they are being hunted, so they do take care to conceal their location and movements.

Eventually, they turn east as well, heading in the direction of Doriath. They don't make it very far when Beren slips away. After Lúthien hears the sound of a confrontation and investigates, she comes across a skirmish between elves and orcs and at this point decides to seek out Beren. The ill-fated elves Lúthien witnesses the demise of set out from Tol Sirion towards the beginning of the episode, and they do find the site where the Leap of Beren happened. Daeron parts ways with them and winds up in the Dry River.

And so, our action for this episode takes place within the highlighted yellow space on the map

regarding yesterdays/today's discussion - well for sure Luthien wants the Quest cancelled - if she has any forsight she would not be interested in having her father killed and her own homeland first devastated and then massacred - and this is what actually Beren's deed will accomplish for Doriath... It will help the Noldor to get back to Valinor - sure - due to Earendil having the Silmaril - but the Sindar were happy in Doriath - for them it is just a disaster with no real win...
So she actually sacrifices most of her compatriots and future children/grand-children to massacre just to get the "hot guy" by agreeing to the Quest - not really very noble...

I see no reason to assume that Lúthien's foresight gives her detailed knowledge of the future. She was aware that Beren was in danger before he was captured, but she didn't know he was at Tol-en-gaurhoth. She may have suspected the Sons of Fëanor's motives, but she didn't know that they would try to trap her in Nargothrond or force her to marry Celegorm. She may get a flash of knowledge of impending doom at some point, but not now. At present, it is not that she fears the quest will doom her whole people - it's that she finds the quest unnecessary. She wants to be with Beren, and she doesn't see the quest as a necessary step towards that goal. Beren sees things otherwise.
