I am going to post the Outlines here, in the hopes that we can get them all cleaned up and ready to go over the next few weeks. I'm posting them in Google Docs format, so that everyone is welcome to comment on them/proofread them/make suggestions.

Hopefully, after the outline review process, I can incorporate the notes as well, so that these will be up-to-date 'approved' Script Outlines. For now, though, they are rough drafts only. You can continue to comment on specific episodes on the threads dedicated to that.

I realize that there are some season long story arcs that we will need to keep straight. I don't want to drop the ball and forget something important, so I will try to have as many of these rough drafts ready for review as possible in the near future. [As a 'for instance' - what is our Tom Bombadil cameo this season?] Please feel free to edit or make comments on the Google Docs - that is the purpose of using that format in the first place.

Thanks so much for getting so much work done, Marie. As to the Tom Bombadil cameo for this season, my best recommendation would be in E06 after the Ents decide to take a walk.

Thank you for putting them online so we can see them.

Does any episode mention Morgoth putting his power and hate into the Orcs? I think it might be worth mentioning since it seems significant to what the Orcs become.

Yes, it's in Episode 3, Scene 12.

The other thing I want to keep track of is Fëanor's crown after his death. The remaking of Finwë's crown by Fëanor was such a pivotal scene at the end of the last season, that we have to make sure we have a suitably meaningful and significant send-off towards the end of this season (preferably directly contrasted with the Iron Crown).

That's some really good work there! The Kinslaying episode is thrilling!

(As before, I'm wondering a little about the frame and how it works with the main story, but there are no particular new problems)

So, is there any preference for whether to capitalize or not capitalize "elves", "dwarves", "ents", and "orcs" ?

I was thinking of proofreading for consistency.

I think we might as well capitalize all instances of names of races. That's helpful in this type of outline format, right? I don't think it would be required for scripts unless it seemed appropriate, but for now, capitalize?

So, yep, editing-for-standardization would be great!

Also, if anyone wants to suggest edits, but for whatever reason isn't comfortable editing the documents directly, the Google Docs have an option for that: You can select 'Viewing,' 'Editing,' or 'Suggesting' mode.

I was planning to capitalize. I mean, otherwise how do you tell Men from men, right? The plurals are capitalized in the Silmarillion. The LotR is less consistent, though.

I don't know what to do with singular "elf", "dwarf", "man", "ent", "orc" though, because it seems to be even less consistent between the Silmarillion and the LotR.

In the LotR "Elves", "Elf", "Ents", "Ent", "Entwives", and "Men" tend to be capitalized. But "dwarves", "dwarf", "orcs", and "hobbits" generally aren't. In the Silmarillion both the plurals and "Dwarf", "Elf", "Man", and "Dragon" are capitalized, but "dragons" isn't. In The Hobbit only "Dragon" seems to be capitalized.

Not that actors would pronounce capital words differently, but this isn't actually going to be acted.

Yeah, I think it depends a lot on context/usage as to whether or not it should be capitalized, and also there is some lack of consistency in the texts anyway. Like, how you might talk about 'the captain' but then address him as 'Captain Daniels' or something like that. So, certainly, I'm willing to consider reasons to leave things not capitalized (particularly in the actual scripts). But for the purposes of these outlines, we're referring to groups of characters, so the capitalization helps to emphasize which groups we're talking about, and who is included.

Another thing I can't seem to make up my mind about is whether to name the character Gamil Brôg or Gamil-Brôg. We want 'gamil' to be a title of respect for an older man, so it's not really part of his name, and yet he will be addressed as such, and so...I'm not sure how to make that clear that 'Old Bear' wasn't what he was named as a young dwarf!

It could be a later appellation as well. Also, I dropped a comment in E06, and made a slight grammatical repair (of a typo, I think) in E07.

OK, I [pried myself away from botany research and] started on Ep 6 with capitalizations. Also I made a grammatical edit and changed "Shepherds of the Forest" to "Shepherds of the Trees", and "Middle Earth" to "Middle-earth". I'm capitalizing most every name of a people... except I didn't capitalize "hobbits", which I know looks inconsistent. I'm not sure about that one.

EDIT: It seems I'm editing "anonymously" even though I'm signed into Google under the name Faelivrin. Not sure how that happened. "zoon33" is me, if that name shows up.

Anyway, I finished looking at the capitalization for these 6 Eps. I made a small number of wording changes, mainly just to avoid saying "Elves" or "Thingol" 2-3 times in quick succession, but they shouldn't substantially change the meanings of anything. And I made a few comments and questions.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you thinking that instead of landing in Fingolfin's hands next season, Feanor's crown should actually be destroyed?

Other than battle, I don't know how that would happen. But he would wear his helm to battle, not his crown.

So would it burn with Feanor?

That wouldn't make sense to me. Why wouldn't he be wearing his helmet in battle?

There was some discussion of making Fëanor's crown so that it could be integrated with a helm when one was worn, but I don't recall how that landed. I'll have to back and listen to the sessions from the end of last season.

OK, that would make it possible to wear the crown in battle.

We did decide that by the time he died the healers had taken his armor off. Do they take off his helm too? It would make sense to me to do so, but maybe Feanor refuses. Either way I don't think it would burn up with his clothes, so if he died wearing it, it should be left lying on the ground afterwards. In that case it would need to be incorporated as a prop into the argument between his sons in the scene after he dies. Who picks it up (probably Curufin) and then what happens? Does he give it to anyone, does anyone snatch it from him?

I like the idea of Fingolfin receiving it, deciding it looks absurd with those 3 Silmaril holes in it, and reforging it into something more closely resembling his father's crown. The scene could even be made to echo the Ringil reforging scene from Season 3, as a contrast -- Ringil creates tension about the conflict among the Noldor, but the crown symbolizes their reunion.

Exactly - we have options, there, but I want to make sure we give a fitting follow up when dealing with Fëanor's short-lived term as ruler of the Noldor in Middle-earth, considering how much emphasis we put on him making that crown. I want the Oath to be the last thing that Fëanor 'crafts', but the crown will be the last item he physically makes. I just don't want to leave the crown out of this season entirely, and so I should probably move this conversation to the episode where Fëanor dies.

I know we have Fingolfin reforging Ringil, but are we going to make him a smith? The Noldor as a whole loved crafts, but not all the Noldor and even when it comes to Feanor's sons only Curufin inherited his skill.

It would be a nice way to differentiate the two brothers. Feanor is master of most trades and personally forges his crown, where as Fingolfin has his crown forged for him.
