Season 4 Casting Call

We've been calling them by Sindarin names since Season 2 in Valinor. It's just simpler if they each have one name.

But if you mean in the books, they started using Sindarin names when they learned to speak the Sindarin language, or when they shifted to using it everyday.

Maybe Egalmoth? He's pretty high-ranking, judging by the fact that Turgon entrusts him, alongside Glorfindel and Ecthelion, to escort Aredhel through Beleriand, he survives the Fall of Gondolin as well. Plus, he has a distinctive, unnamed sword (it's curved instead of cruciform).

Or am I thinking too far ahead?

I don't think we need Egalmoth yet? But I do want him to have a role in Gondolin's fall. And we can have him survive Gondolin, so he's available as a non-redshirt to die in the Third Kinslaying. That's more-or-less what happens to him in the Lost Tales (except the Havens are attacked by Orcs instead of Elves).

I don't think we should have major famous Balrog-slayers be the escorts who mess up and return as failures. That's why Tolkien cut them out of that role. They can be nobodies (and if they are nobodies, we can have giant spiders hideously kill one or two of them. They ought to kill somebody, someday).

I think Turgon had three of his main captains escort Aredhel because he trusts them, instead of red shirts. He tends to go overboard when it comes to her, given that he is very reluctant to have her leave (possibly moreso here because she is the Besan of Gondolin) and later has Eol executed against her wishes for killing her (I'm in favor of Turgon doing it himself, but that's another matter entirely).

Anyways, I thought you were in favor of introducing Egalmoth this season.

Huh, I forgot I suggested that. Introducing him before the fall of Gondolin would be good, but maybe doesn't have to be Season 4. I dunno.

So is this the list for the main story?:

  • Caranthir
  • Adult Idril
  • Ecthelion
  • Glorfindel
  • Edhellos
  • Glaurung
  • Orodreth's wife (Meril?)
  • Annael
  • Rog
  • Fankil?
  • A sibling (or two) of Celeborn (at least a sister?)
  • Oropher? (Perhaps not this season)
  • Curufin’s wife
  • Thorondor (Voice, primarily)
Edit: I put in Oropher, but he might not be introduced yet. He’s supposed to get caught? And was it Curufin’s wife, as well?
Aaand Thorondor...

I think so. I’ve speculated about Egalmoth as well (he was the third bodyguard escorting Aredhel alongside Glorfindel and Ecthelion) and add Thorondor.

  • An artisan wife of a son of Fëanor?

Yes, Oropher is supposed to get caught, not sure when or how he gets out. And the main candidate for the artisan wife captive is Curufin’s wife.

Oropher won't be captured this season, I don't think...he'll end up at Tol-in-Gaurhoth, and Sauron doesn't capture that tower until the end of Season 5. Of course, he'll be rescued in Season 6, so we might not want him to be such a short-term captive. Maybe Dagor Bragollach for capture?

Curufin's wife, yes. She should be on this list.

Dagor Bragollach sounds like a good bet. He'll have a few episodes to stew (depends on how long we draw out Beren and Luthien).

Is it a good idea to have Thorondor and Egalmoth this season? Or am I thinking too far ahead?

Thorondor appears this season, so he certainly belongs on the list.

Too early for Egalmoth, most likely - we're not sure how we'll tell the story of Aredhel's departure from Gondolin (that's a question for next season), so I would hesitate to cast him at this time. There are *many* potential minor characters to include in Gondolin, so we won't have them all. The question is...which ones will actually have roles and lines in this project? And...we're just not sure yet.

As for Oropher...even if we aren't going to have him captured this season, we might introduce him at some point. So, perhaps we can leave him in as a tentative with a question mark for now. We 'know' we are going to cast him in this project eventually, but what we don't yet know is what character we are going to give him.

Maglor and Fingolfin both need Besain (my suggestion is Maglor's wife and Irime's daughter).
Celeborn should have both a brother and a father.

I still want to persuade the Execs to kill off somebody else instead of Curufin's wife. My suggestion was a son of Maglor.

So we're stuck with killing off a Feanorian wife. :( MithLuin and I both suggest using Caranthir's wife intead of Curufin's.

Minor characters to cast:
Annael
Ecthelion
Glorfindel
'Rog' (suggestions for renaming him here)
Celeborn's sister (Faenoron? Galadlas? Galadlos? Celeblos?) among the Green-elves
Meril (Orodreth's fiancé/wife), one day to be Besan of Dorthonion > Minas Tirith
Edhellos/Angrod's wife, scholar?, very briefly the Besan of Dorthonion
Caranthir's or Curufin's wife (Pennor = Quennar?) chief healer, scholar/loremaster, and artisan

Maybe minor characters now, maybe background characters (not cast) until a later season:
Maglor's wife (Faniel?) Fëanorian Besan and scholar, maybe a healer too (to replace Caranthir/Curufin's wife as Fëanorian chief healer)
Fingolfin's Besan and chief healer (Lalwen daughter of Irimë, mother or sister of Glorfindel)
Fingolfin's herald (Erien?)
Galadhon or Celeborn’s mother (name) (likely only needed in 2 episodes, maybe don’t need to name mom yet)
Galathil (likely only needed in 2 episodes)
chief of the exiled Houseless Dwarves (Mîm the I? Nîm? unnamed?)

Inglor?? (Follower of Finrod and father of Gildor. It would be cool to include him and then send him to Tol-in-Gaurhoth in Season 6. Give Finrod somebody to talk to in Nargothrond, although we could use Edrahil instead. Maybe not introduced until Season 5.)

It's Curufin's wife for now; we'll see if any changes are made to that moving forward. To clarify, she's not being killed off, but made captive, and as we will potentially have scenes in Angband's dungeons throughout the seasons, that does not mean she's being written off the show the way the elves in Valinor are.
