The Rangers and Mirkwood

Until you (Corey) pointed it out, I had never considered the sunless woods to be Mirkwood. But it certainly makes sense, in terms of familiarity (for the Hobbits and the readers) for that to be one of the areas that Aragorn is referencing. Of course, that also means that their protection extends much further than I had imagined as well. If some Rangers do cross the Misty Mountains and hunt Mirkwood for signs of the Enemy then that means their population is even more spread out. I imagine it's more of a 'special ops thing' — Gandalf comes to them and says "The Necromancer has retreated from Dol Guldur, I need some boots on the ground to make sure it stays unoccupied" and they do what they can (eventually failing, of course). It also might help explain why Halbarad could only round up so many Rangers to go South, if they had obligations Eastward as well.

Or, is 'sunless woods' just color for the Old Forest and the Trollshaws?

I always thought of the “sunless woods” as the Old Forest. I felt a little surprised when Mirkwood was mentioned!
