The Ring and Planning

one thought on the way we talk about the Ring and its sentience: Might the Ring's poor planning be thought of as the Ring's sentience being limited to its ability to react to events but not to act (long term planning)? That might explain its willingness and ability to quasi plan (betraying its bearer) but not anticipate the results of the betrayal.

That's always been my interpretation of the Ring's sentience. It has a will and ability to act and some level of awareness, but it isn't sapient, it isn't capable of abstract thinking or long-term planning.
