The Sam thread

do you think that Sam’s comment about ‘where to live’ might best be understood as a moment when he lets his Gamgee side speak out (as he will do when he calls himself ’ninnyhammer’)? Despite the fact that he swore to Gildor that he would never leave Frodo, Sam still cares deeply about the Shire in general and his father particularly. We‘ll see this at The Mirror of Galadriel in a decade or so. Perhaps having just listened to Gandalf’s tale of talking with his father, he’d begun hearing the Gaffer’s ‘words of wisdom’ in his head. (Like no good comes of being learnt his letters.)

Or perhaps Sam is simply hyper-sensitive to Frodo’s moods, but his anxiety focuses on the practical — he is, after all, responsible for making sure Frodo eats properly, sleeps well, and doesn’t catch his death of cold.
