I would put Gandalf's "your friend the Strider" alongside "the Lord Denethor," "the Prince Imrahil," "the lady Eowyn," and later "the Lord Aragorn" as a proper naming for people of a certain rank. At this point after the Council, Aragorn's rank has been revealed openly. We have talked about the hobbits continuing to call him Strider even after he is crowned. I always think of his reminding them in Bree that Strider will be their guide, so of course he has been Strider to them up to their arrival in Rivendell. Gandalf here seems to be acknowledging both their friendship and Strider's rank.
