    First post

I don’t know if you’ve ever looked at a YouTube comment thread, but I can understand why they are turned off. A reasonable discussion amongst people here, no matter how intense, still maintains a sense of decorum, unlike the name calling and mudslinging that YouTube comments have a tendency towards.

Adaptations: the good, the bad, the unfaithful

So, last episode the discussion turned to poor adaptations. At the same time, this article came across my radar: https://www.cbr.com/unfaithful-sci-fi-adaptation-movies/. Thought it might be fodder for or inform discussions in that direction.

Re-reading the series - how many times? :)

I've found Unfinished Tales and the Book of Lost tales as Library of Congress recordings for the visually impaired, which you can find in the wild, say at Archive.org. https://archive.org/details/TBOLT1-Audio/01.mp3 and https://archive.org/details/TBOLT2-Audio . Unfinished tales has been...

Re-reading the series - how many times? :)

I spent most of my reading time in Grades 8-12 reading and re-reading. Then annually. Then every few years, then not for a few years, then I started listening to the podcast and started to read along. That lasted the first few chapters, until the Great Slowdown. Now I'm back to once a year or...

Over/under on how long the Lord of the Rings Movie discussion will go on in Other Minds and Hands

I mean, they've got a couple years before Rings of Power comes back, and if Maggie gives Corey free rein...well, how many decades are we currently estimating for the book discussion to last?

    Obscure Tolkien Adaptations

There's some good info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle-earth_in_motion_pictures And here: https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Tolkien_Gateway:Projects/Adaptations Or perhaps better: https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Portal:Adaptations

    Humble bundle

If you haven’t seen, the latest humble bundle has 27 (sometimes tenuously) Tolkien related books, including a bunch of Charles Williams novels. https://www.humblebundle.com/books/all-about-tolkien-books

Keep it secret; it will keep you safe

Hey. So throwback to a few episodes back (I am running about a month behind on podcast listening; sorry. That means I'm like, three paragraphs behind you). Thinking about why Bilbo told Frodo not to let anyone else know that he had given him the coat of Mithril. There were a bunch of ideas that...

    Feed borked again?

....and I ask not because I want to stir the effluent, but similar to what Simon Says (tee hee): if it is something that they need help with, I can (possibly) help, but no idea how to pitch in.

    Feed borked again?

Hey. So Last episode on either Apple Podcasts or Downcast is episode 147 from June. I see there's new episodes up on YouTube, though. Seems like the feed might be borked again? Or did it get pulled and nobody mentioned it? For those of us who like to listen to podcasts while...

    The sword that was broken

Hey. So I think we've been dancing around the 600 lb gorilla in the room long enough. Is Bilbo the first to call Narsil "The Sword that was broken?" We know Aragorn calls it that as a matter of course, but did Bilbo pick that up from him, or did he start saying that because of Bilbo? Because...

    Back to Earendil (sort of)

So, when we were discussing the rhyme scheme of Eärendil was a Mariner...two comparisons came up. Well, three, but I've already talked about Gilbert and Sullivan earlier. The other two were Doctor Suess and Gangsta Rap. I found these a rather interesting follow on, as well as a template for...

    Thoughts on Earendil...

That's a secondary issue I'm having; when classes post to the feed. The entire fundraising campaign episodes were all dropped the last day or the day after the campaign ended. Not that it means I can't still donate any time I want, just that there are perks to participating in the campaign that...

    Thoughts on Earendil...

I'm only just now getting to 118, and nearing the end of the discussion (I think; for all I know there's going to be a few more months on Eärendil, which is fine by me), and there has been no mention of Gilbert and Sullivan (Colbert makes the connection above), and we could get into it when we...
