Quenya Word "hondo"

In Session 12 of The Nature of Middle-earth, we were discussing the Quenya word "hondo" which translated to the place of deepest feelings. I found it interesting that "hondo" in Spanish means "deep". I wonder if Tolkien knew about that and chuckled to himself while writing this?

Since Spanish descended from Latin, and 'hondo' comes from 'fundus' (bottom) it seems more likely he was just borrowing from that foundational language and applying well-known rules of transformation. He seems to have done this quite a lot. Even Quendi ('speakers') is suspiciously similar to eloquens (“speaking, having the faculty of speech")...
