Hi all,
I was just listening to class 10 from two weeks ago and had two quick thoughts:
In Canto 12, we discussed the river of blood as an inversion of the blood of Christ, and also the relation of the boiling blood to the fiery poisonous blood of Nessus. One thought I had in going through this again is it could represent the blood that was spilled by the violent. They are eternally being punished in the blood of their victims, in the same way that Heracles was punished by the blood of his victim Nessus.
Later, in the wood of the suicides, we discussed Dante showing mercy to the souls there to spread their fame back in the world of the living (and this has come up before), and this as a good they received. It strikes me that to the extent this is a good that the damned receive, it is temporary. After the last judgement, there will be no more spreading their fame on earth. This is similar to what we saw with the heretics earlier; for now they get the good of future knowledge, but after the last judgement that will be closed off to them.
