In episode 293 it was observed that the written records of Khazad-dum were likely written by the Dwarves after its fall in the year 1981 of the Third Age, over a thousand years before the Quest of Mount Doom, long enough for them to write it, for him to read it, and then forget some details.

But since Gandalf had been among the dwarves long enough to earn the name Thrakun from them, is it not possible that he was a guest in Khazad-dum before its darkening, sometimes between third age 1000 and 1900 or so? Even then the West Gate was probably long since disused, given that Eregion had already been desolate for several millennia by the arrival of the Istari and also Eriador populations continued to decline after the dissolution of Arnor.

Do we think the text will give some indication of his prior knowledge of the Dwarrowdelf before his reported east-to-west journey which he reported during the Company’s time in Hollin? It seems plausible at least, even if the text gives no clear sign.
