I find the following passage really interesting….
“Never since have the Ainur made any music like to this music, though it has been said that a greater still shall be made before Ilúvatar by the choirs of the Ainur and the Children of Ilúvatar after the end of days. Then the themes of Ilúvatar shall be played aright, and take Being in the moment of their utterance, for all shall then understand fully his intent in their part, and each shall know the comprehension of each, and Ilúvatar shall give to their thoughts the secret fire, being well pleased.”
To me, this seems to imply that that the vision of Arda and the history that ensues is more like a dress rehearsal than the main performance. The music of the Ainur is not “aright” and might have “flubbed notes”. The main performance includes the Children of Ilúvatar as choir members and only takes Being at the end of days.
As a silly example, perhaps Gollum slipping into the Cracks of Doom is a “flubbed note” and only an unwitting “alternate ending” by the partial choir. Perhaps at the end of days, the music (with it’s additional choir members) is made aright and it turns out he threw the ring into the fire instead. He is cured of his madness and becomes a hero lol.
To me, this implies there is a “beyond” the end of days. I like to imagine it’s like the theory of the multiverse. Ilúvatar’s Ea is just one of an infinite number of burst bubbles in the Cauldron of the simmering Soup of everything and everywhen.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this and would be grateful to hear from you.
