While catching up with the classes I had to miss, I have been struck by how much of the four hobbits' has a pre-Great War vibe. The conversation where the conspiracy is revealed sounds somewhat like the plan for friends to sign up for the buddy regiments that went off to France -- and that Tolkien had to wait to join (so that he could complete his studies). The discussion of adventure-as-sport, as Corey put it, matches the tenor of the time. The Great War, like so many others, was supposed to end by Christmas. It was a lark.
