Time Capsule: Faramir and Eowyn

This is for thoughts that won’t be applicable until 2030 or so.

I had a thought during the discussion about Boromir‘s story about the fight on the bridge. Clearly, Boromir would have left his brother (the other heir) in charge of destroying the bridge behind the defenders. Clearly, Faramir decided to ignore orders and stay with Boromir in order to protect him with his own life.

How similar is that to what Eowyn did? Ignoring Theoden’s orders to remain in Dunharrow in order to protect him with her own life.

Interesting. Love does motivate both of them. The difference is that Eowyn is suicidal and Faramir isn't. (Denethor and the Black Breath have not yet made him as depressed as we see him later, but even then I don't think he is suicidal.)

I'm so glad Tolkien decided finally not to kill Eowyn off, and to let these two heal each other.
