Tolkien Professor and Mythgard for Europeans

Hey guys!

As a European (Sweden) who really loves The Tolkien Professor and the Mythgard stuff I'm finding it quite hard to follow everything that happens, like the schedule for this course etc. Time differencials are hard. I was thinking maybe it would be nice to have a group/forum for Europeans into The Tolkien Professor and Mythgard in order to keep informed, share stuff and possibly even coordinate travel to moots and stuff. Anyway, anymore Europeans in here who think this would be a good idea?

Hi Galion

I think that would be a great idea! I'm in the UK, and it would be good to compare notes with other people in the same/similar time zone. We've just gone back one hour from BST to GMT (I hate this time of year ). Like you, I struggle to keep up with Corey's LOTR discussions given the time difference. I have to wait until they're posted on YouTube, but the scheduling seems a little haphazard. No doubt it depends on the good Professor's commitments.

I've tried listening in the morning after to the podcasts on Twitter or Periscope, but the volume on those channels is all over the place; I struggle to hear one minute, then I'm deafened the next.

I'm in the same timezone as Prof. Olsen, but not on the same sleeping schedule! I go to bed soon after the start of class and I've never yet attended live. I also rely on the podcasts, and as you've noted, sometimes they appear quite some time later. (I totally understand this: I edit a -- well, not a podcast, but a SoundCloud upload of a live radio program -- and it goes online anywhere from the next day to -- I was going to say the next week, but truthfully, sometimes it never does get online at all.)

As far as the volume level, I've never had a problem except in the field trips. Sometimes Trish is too quiet, more often lately, too loud. I believe the YouTube videos are a different edit: I always listen to the mp3's from the podcast feeds. Sound quality varies when Corey's on the road, but it's always at least adequate.

I think it's pretty awesome that Mythgard is global, with students from just about everywhere. Anything that makes this better could be worth doing.

Cool, let's set something up! Nice to know there are more people in the struggle. There are some good apps from the podcasts. I use iTunes U where I get the discussions in both video and audio.

Okay, this where I reveal what a tech muppet I am, so please be gentle... I only ever use my laptop (Windows 10) to go online, because I'm more comfortable with it, and in my rural area it's the most reliable means anyway. But when I downloaded iTunes and Grover to set up feeds for the other Mythgard class podcasts, I couldn't get either application to work for me.

So, Mr Strongbottle, shall we meet here again later this week to share thoughts on this Tuesday's ep. 82 class?

I see, not sure about what solutions there might be for computers, I'm afraid. Maybe YouTube is your best bet. Yeah, we could! Or would it be easier on Facebook or something? Maybe I should send the Professor an e-mail and check if there are any similar iniatives like this.

Yes, it might be a good idea for you to contact the Prof first, just in case.

I actually deleted my Facebook account earlier this year. It's ironic that since then I've received several invitations to join specialist FB discussion groups. I would be prepared to re-join simply for this purpose, if it makes it easier.

I've tweeted the professor (couldn't find any e-mail address) but so far received no reply.

I'm used to using Facebook for everything, but I'm open to use any other forum/tool if you prefer :)

I'm a tech muppet, remember? :D Facebook it is, then. I'll set up a new account there. What will you call the FB group/discussion, so that I can find you? I'm not actually a water spirit of the River Tees, and I'll be using my own name on FB. ;)

I rarely make the live sessions, but I've found that Twitch is the best way for me to catch up. I can usually watch the next day. YouTube is the next best, and ITunes University the best quality, but slowest. (I don't do Twitter, so I have no advice there.)
