Wanderers in the world

Gildor's description of Frodo's company as "other wanderers in the world," interests me. "Wanderers in the world" is just a nicely alliterative phrase, but it's the other in "other wanderers in the world" that particularly intrigues me. It seems to place Frodo & Co., in some sense, on parity with Gildor's Wandering Company.

It seems to me in this context that wanderers are distinct from, say, travelers. I imagine wanderers could include both restless exiles (like Gildor, and perhaps, Aragorn), as well as restless adventurers (like Bilbo and Frodo). But it would not include, for instance, Farmer Maggot going to market, or Nob traveling to The Golden Perch to pick up a few kegs.

I don't want to make too much of it, but I think there's a little something there. Or possibly I've spent too much time at The Golden Perch.

It also makes me wonder whether Gildor ever heard Bilbo's "The Road Goes Ever On." I suspect he would appreciate it.
