Do you think the intent is that we are to be surprised that the Hobbits need to use Tom's summoning song for help, or are we supposed to be expecting it.
It seems excruciatingly obvious to me that the summons will happen, and that we should already (as of the mist) be expecting them to be considering using it, but I don't remember so far back as my first reading for that initial reaction.
