Important Lesson for Frodo

So, thinking about the section of Chapter 2 we went through this week, it struck me.

This is really all the information (other than trivial things like maps and directions) that Frodo ever learns that actually matters.

Nothing new that he learns in Rivendell, or from Gandalf or Aragorn or Faramir later, or even from Galadriel, ever is of any true import. This bit of Gollum's story and the small amount of Ring Lore are the only things he ever needs to know.

It seems to me that Gandalf himself is an instrument of Destiny here, as he is telling more of the story than maybe seems absolutely necessary at the time, but ultimately is critical to the resolution.
