This is where Melkor and Ungoliant had their thieves' quarrel and the echoes of Melkor's cry remain until the end of Beleriand. It is a bleak coastal region surrounded by mountains.

Well, it's not exactly surrounded by mountains, the mountains (Ered Lómin) are to the east.
