Now I don’t know if we’re going to be casting Shelob’s voice. I have imagined Shelob being able to speak, or finding some means of communicating with characters like Sauron or Gollum. Maisie is shown to have an airy, slightly raspy voice, which I always imagined with spiders. And definitely creepy and dangerous.

There is menace in the softness of her voice. There's also a halting, staccato quality about it that would be great for portraying Shelob, whose speech is basic at best. I also think she'd work great with the motion capture as her movements are rather wary and wild creature-like as she plays the character Thyra in The Last Kingdom (below).

She definitely brought a certain presence to her role. I remember feeling slightly uneasy whenever there was a scene with Thyra in it, not quite knowing what the outcome would be. She was untame and unpredictable, but also had dimension to her character. I think she'd be a great Shelob.
