Tennant was great as Dr. Who. But "subdued" and "subtle" are not words I would use to describe any of the modern Dr. Who performances.

I agree that subtle is a huge part of Maeglin -- after all, only Idril sees through him, and maybe Tuor? And even at his worst, he's not a laughing manically, "burn it to the ground" sort.

Been thinking about this one...nope, can't see him as Maeglin. Maybe it's just this photo, but he looks... petulant? Not a leader/adviser that would be taken seriously.
