Hobbit naming.

Hi.
I have an impression that a good portion of Hobbit first names are Frankish. Is this true, or is it me? Drogo, Pippin and Odo are Frankish names.

that's true...namesre are a lot of frankish and burgundian names.

personally i always thought those might represent the language of the woodmen of rhovanion...

JRRT says (in Appendix F) that the resemblance of these Hobbit-names to those found in our "real" world is an accidental artefact of translation. While many Hobbit-maids had names of flowers or jewels, most Hobbit-lads (and some -maids) had names with no current meaning in their language, so JRRT borrowed a bunch of names from all over. He does mention that he refrained from tweaking them to fit the appropriate gender-suffix (-a for lads and -o/-e for maids) because that would look odd to us Brits :D

still a lot of hobbits wear morthron names... and they come from rhovanion. others, especially the brandybucks have arthurian and welsh names... and their ancestors lived in dunland. jrrt mentioned that his pre-gondorian mames to have a celtic feel...

accident oo coincidence or not?
