Elves

Honestly, anyone under 5'10" doesn't look particularly elvish in real life. There are camera tricks and platform shoes, but at some point, the proportions are off. We don't have to care *too* much about that, but I would hesitate to cast a 5'7" male actor for a role that is meant to be a tall male elf.

I am 5'3" and enjoy dressing up as an elf. But I don't *look* like an elf at all, and not just because my body type isn't 'willowy'. With 6" platforms, I look more elvish :p.

Well I'm 6'2" so can snatch myself a cameo somewhere. ;)

Haha I'm 6' but otherwise all Dwarf all the time. Forced perspective!

(I've got an Australian friend who is 6'3" or 6'4" and he and everyone in his town that were of that height were cast as extras in one of the Matrix sequels as stand-ins for a mob of Hugo Weavings that got digitally replaced in post)

What about Sam Claflin as Fingon and Armie 'Tallest guy in Hollywood' Hammer as Turgon?...

Tom Hughes, maybe as Maeglin?... Oh I think I've suggested him before...

Tom Hughes is a pretty good match. I also like your earlier suggestion of Ben Barnes (I think Marielle prefers Barnes too).

Yes, Barnes looks very much like Maeglin on that picture (and on many others). I just... Well I saw Westworld and he played a kind of bad guy there. He did it well, but his style was really not what I'm looking for in the son of Eöl. I guess he has more than that on his repertoire but it ruined my picture of him as Maeglin. I don't rule him out but it was, well, perhaps a bit too much actually.

Here's another elf (not Maeglin though): upload_2017-3-31_8-16-46.jpeg
Tom Mison. He's English, seen in Sleepy Hollow and about 6' tall. Could be a son of Hiddleston/Fingolfin. OR maybe Finrod?

Finrod is the wisest of the Noldor. So while he does have to be a pretty blond who looks like Galadriel's brother....he also has to have a gravitas about him that makes him look wise for his age. He's going to be the first to meet Men; he's going to be friends with Bëor and Barahir (and Andreth?), and unlike every other elf ever, he's not going to look down on them at all. So he has that humility rather than pride thing going on which is so rare among the Noldor princes! And he's going to have a nobility that reads 'king'. He has Ulmo dreams and sings and keeps his word. Oh, and his death is going to happen when he bursts out of his chains and wrestles a werewolf to death to save Beren.

Here's another suggestion for Turgon: Oliver Jackson Cohen. He's pretty tall. 6'3".

Hm I found a picture of him next to Jake Gyllenhaal. They're supposed to look alike I guess. Could Gyllenhaal be Fingon?

I'm not sure about that.

We probably don't want characters to look too similar, because then the audience will mix them up.

The similarities are actually quite superficial. Their noses are far from the same, and even if they've got prominent eyebrows they too are clearly different.

I support Freddie Highmore as Maeglin.

You know....I could get behind Hammer as Turgon. I feel like there was another face at some point I had in mind for that character, but it was just in passing and I definitely can't recall it now. I'd be okay with Hammer, though.

Question: having never seen Westword (no HBO, *sigh*) how similar/dissimilar is his villain there to his Dorian Grey? Dorian is more hedonistic than we'd want Maeglin to be , but it still was interesting... if he's shown a range there, it might be promising....

On the other hand, Claflin and and Hammer are growing on me at Fingon and Turgon.

Are we bothering to cast Argon?

The existence or non-existence of Argon will emerge during our discussions of Season 3. Right now, we just don't know.
