Session 3.01 and 3.07 - Season Overview

Tol sirion and amon ereb both are stretegic positions... I mean the noldor later occupy and fortify these points, so it seems plausible that also angband tries to get a hold there to establish bridgeheads to oversee the lowlands of beleriand.

Yes, I think that, if you read the PubSil, it's pretty clear that Thingol, Denethor and the Dwarves take the orcs by surprise. When that happens, Boldog solves the situation by attacking those who seem to be least able to defend themselves (the Lindi) and at the same time, he runs for a better strategic postition. This, regrettably for Boldog, puts him in a position to be surrounded, and he has to break though the enemy lines - which he does but with serious losses. Well, both sides lose a lot of people.

That map is a bit weird to me, too. I notice that Angband is much too far south.

My understanding is that before Melian created the Girdle, the Sindar were sort of loosely spread out all over Beleriand.

I agree; again, I used the map as a reference to make a point, not to illustrate a canon. For example, there are some small arrows indicating that the Sindar were spread out and joined together for battle but they’re mostly in the forests of (future) Doriath and should be seen in a lot of places.

Posting these unedited notes as-is for now, so y'all can use them at your convenience. I'll tidy up later when I have some free time.

Silmfilm 3.07

Meeting with Dwarves:

Relationship with elves shaky, easier to convey if they’ve just met them..

*Daeron could fill in the gaps with his storytelling and singing of songs
*Green elves as FOIL for the Noldor

Sindar are in trouble and in need of allies

· meet Dwarves (uncertain)

· Cirdan (eh…)

· Green elves arrive with Ents (yay, friends!), but get slaughtered

Death of Denethor big tragedy at the end of the timeline

Sindar story needs to have a culmination (Denethor’s death)

Fighting the long defeat….

Stages?

**Arrival of Noldor should look like eucatastrophe to the Sindar

List of major events in Sindar storyline:

Meet dwarves

Meet orcs

Build Menegroth

Re establish characters and what’s going on

Eol’s prominence and relationship with dwarves (more active in the earlier battles, fighting alongside dwarves, a potential ally…)

Meeting the dwarves…

Mim and his grievance

Preliminary skirmishes….

Things start to get bad for the Sindar

Boldog and the orcs (Sindar lose, green elves come in, get slaughtered)

Q: Who gets credit for the victory in the south? Sauron? Boldog?

- we don’t need Boldog to be another Gothmog

- he’s under Sauron’s orders

- Boldog is the representative of the orcs

*Ents suffer loss

Spiders…..

- Sauron enlists the spiders when the orcs are unsuccessful with the girdle?

- Spiders and werewolves attacking the havens?

- Werewolves attack havens and spiders attack Doriath (Melian drives spiders away with the girdle)

- Menegroth besieged by spiders, forest corrupted, Melian sings the girdle into being (important song), ring spreads out and spiders flee

- Werewolves besiege Havens, Falas taken over, Cirdan escapes via ships

Q: When is the girdle established? Where in the Noldor timeline does it happen?

- parallel with rising of the moon and arrival of Fingolfin ?

- around the time of the Noldor victories, after death of Feanor…

*Sauron needs to be in Angband around the time of the parley (He’s had victory…etc)

Q: Who tells the Sindar about the Noldor?

- Cirdan (comes across wreck of ships/sees the light from the burning?)

- Moment of grief/sadnesss (regognizes them as Olwe’s ships)

Q: Should the sindar be aware of Melkor?

- Melian is aware and tells them

Next time:

Revised episode outline to include the decisions from today

Next discussion will be focused on the mood, reintroducing characters, etc…

- need some events

I thought that the culmination of the Sindar story was going to be Melian creating the Girdle, so that Denethor doesn't die multiple episodes after Feanor?
